'THE EYES OF THE COMMUNITY SPIDER'

Community Eyes and The Spider have signed a peace treaty (we fought over gossip rights), so we's together now for a final farewell to out curious co-eds.

Spring has sprung some new couples among the old. Dan W. (White) has been noticed in corners with Sharon H.(Howard); Richard C. (Clement) has been seen holding hands at a party with Anne F. (Farnsworth); Bernard S. (Satterield) has been found with Heather S. (Sherman) more than once; and Bill B. (Burgi) seems to like Nancy J. - and vice-versa.

Molly and Lenore H., ex-community-ites, had a splash party. Tom I. (Isenburg) was spotted crawling around on the lawn taking pictures. Negatives aren't cheap, kids! Many of you might remember Ken A.'s (Arnold) starting remark: "Hey, this isn't Sara!". The Eyes of the Community Spider noticed some non-steadies around the pool and porch. Sylvia C. (Chariott) came with Bob G. (Gibbs); Jack B. (Boyt) brought Sandy O. (Ord); Tina L. (Elena Linneman) was with a handsome outsider. Of course, the usual steadies were there too.

The first swimming party of the year was held at Jim W.'s (Wood). Even though it was a gray day, the mood wasn't clouded. Mavis C. (Carlstrom) and Diane C. (Camp) had an accident going home. They are fine now, luckily. Jim doesn't remember much about the party, but it was at his home.

Mike H.'s (Hankinson) impromptu swimming party came off well even on such short notice. Everyone and everything went swimming, even the Coke bottles. Sandi M. (Mitchell) and Basab B. (Basu) were together there. What was the ratio of girls to boys again, Mike?

Lee B.'s (Bertman) annual layout had about the same ratio as Mike H.'s (Hankinson) swimming party. At four o'clock the ratio dropped when Karen C. (Claassen) and Bonnie C. (Cooper) left. Leigh W. (Worthing) and Larry C. (Claassen) spent a good deal of their time madly dictating to Sandy O. (Ord), who was at the typewriter. Dan W. (White), Shaul E. (Ezer), Kevin R. (Robinson), Mike H. (Hankinson), Chuck S. (Sandes) and Lee B. (Bertman) were slaving away.

Now let's get to some more local news for awhile. Libby S. (Sayre) took a dip with the frogs in the school pool. People are found in the oddest places! Mr. Arpee's sister and friend visited C.H.S. for a day. Who put (or helped) the locker in front of Mr. Wenger's door during fifth period? Also, who knocked it over?

The Eyes of the Community Spider were peering everywhere at the Junior class's carnival. When we came in, George H. (Horesh) was taking money (for tickets) and he was relieved by Evelyn H. (Hagooli) and others. Outside of the dust, it was a perfect day. Tina L. (Linneman) and Micky E. (Mickey Erle) proved to be skillful donkey drivers. Mike H. (Hankinson) helped keep the atmosphere lively by playing popular records. Vickie S. (Shashoua) sold cake, cookies and brownies. How much tasting did you do, Vickie? Poor Frank S. (Shepard) was struggling to carry a dozen or so balloons - they were inflated and trying to get away from him. Mark P. (Pinassi) surprised everyone by actually bringing the birds he had memtioned over and over and over during the planning meeting. A little bit of dancing began in the last six minutes.

Have you all noticed Miss Boggs and Mrs. Busse with their new coiffures (sic)? Very pretty... Noticed Kevin R. (Robinson) in a bright red and white striped shirt. Kevin, that's not like you! What was that pinned on the back of Hormoz S.'s (Saleh) shirt in geometry class?

How did the screening from around the pool get over to the athletic field? It did not walk or fly by itself... Jack B. (Boyt), Conrad C. (Chromy) and Charlie S. (Sharp) were following suit and swimming with the frogs during their gym class. Jack B. (Boyt) must love that pool because that wasn't the first time he was noticed there!

The Eyes of the Community Spider were listening, if that is possible, in on one of Mr. Arpee's classes when were heard: "I know it is hard for you to keep quiet when I jump around all the time." Would you like to clarify that statement, Mr. Arpee?

Was that Wendell R. (Russell) eating lunch in French class!?? The school pool is very, very popular during the hot weather. Even tennis shoes must think so, for there is always some in there.

Don B.'s (Betts) party was the site for Mickey E.'s (Erle) coordination demonstration, She has excellent coordination, but nevertheless the demonstration didn't last long. (ed: As I recall , Mickey Erle performed backwards hand stands) Scott B. (Bryson) and Rick K. (Klemme) set up a twin speaker tape recorder which for a time made it possible to have a slow song going in the living room and a faster one in the dining room - (but) standing in the doorway, it was rather confusing.

Who was Brenda D. (Dalton) with at the American Club recently? Heard that Mickey E. (Erle) did a swell job of modeling at the Officer's Club recently. Richard C. (Clement) had an exclusive dinner-dancing party.

That newest smell is coming from the biology lab, again. Frogs! Speaking of frogs, when George C. dropped a piece of frog skin in the hall, Kevin R. (Robinson), who was passing, stopped and said: "Did someone lose this?" Is Bob K. (Kohler) really 'skeered' of frog?

Victor D. was throwing stones at a pipe. Miss Rankin looked out of a window and told Victor to stop throwing stones. Elias then yelled, "Exactly Victor!! Don't you know better than to throw stones at the pipe?" Suddenly Elias walked away. It was then we saw that Mr. Irvine had been standing behind Elias all the time.

Say, Chris, see that you have fallen in the pit. If you will take good advice, let go of Vallory and stick to your lessons. You'll make better progress that way.

Was that Sandi M. (Mitchell) imitating a rugged trick of Mr. Arpee's? She climbed out a window during a fire drill. You never know, it could have been a real fire, or as Miss Birnbaum said, "Remember Chicago!"

You must be more careful of those water fountains, Leigh W. (Worthing). Don't complain - you weren't the first to be squirted. Thanks for your Senior ideas, Leigh (Worthing) and Lee (Bertman), that you expressed in assembly.

What rude birds are hanging around the school. One flew right into English class and sat down without knocking. Maybe Chaucer directed him to that room, since he also entered without knocking.

Whose lunch did Mark P. (Pinassi) eat, leaving the owner only a quarter of an apple.

Dan W. (White) has been carrying a chain with him in school. Anyone got any ideas why?

Glenn E. (Ellison) has moved his belt buckle out a notch, or so rumors say. Dianna M., an ex-CHS student, stopped to say "Hi" to the journalism class. She enjoys sleeping late. YAWN - remember when we could wake up after sunrise?

Six people ran for four Student Council offices. Only one office had competition. Bassim N. (Nathan) will be Treasurer, Carolla V. (Von Haussen) will be secretary and Samir S. (Soffer) will be Vice-President in the year to come. Bill H.(Hughes) and Mark P. (Pinassi) competed for the Presidency. They were heard using a few sly remarks in the speeches. These remarks were all in fun, of course. The winner of this last office (Mark) can at least say he had to work to get it.

Is it true Shirin N. (Nasr) has jewelry which was designed for ____ and weighs two tons? Roslyn (Swarthout?) writes love letters in Persian. Who are they to? Murad A. (Abed) had better be careful saying things like, "...then, are all teachers fools?". When Mohsen G. (Gharib) said, "Mrs. Bajjan, I have a question." Fouad B. (Borsham) blurted, "Well, keep it!"

One of us, Spider or Community Eyes, will make a solo appearance in the annual - "Till then, bye."

'PROM QUEEN and PRINCESS'

Queen: We see Sara Harwood as a cute, bright-eyed girl of 5'4". Sara is the girl recognized by the smiling face and sparkling eyes.

She arrived in Tehran in April 1957, and will be leaving June 19 (1961), to go back to the United States by way of Israel and Europe. Sara is originally from Washington, D.C. but plans to go to college at North Western in Illinois. Her sister, Peggy, also went to Community but graduated in her eleventh year and went back to college in the United States. Sara is quite honest about her ambition which is to get married after she finishes college. Her special interest is Ken, who is one of our prominent softball players for the 'Teenagers' (team). She enjoys going to softball games, swimming, and loves to travel. Sara likes to eat ice cream but can't stand the thought of sauerkraut. Her pet peve is conceited people.

Community will miss Sara's gaiety and zeal for life.

----------------------------------------

Princess: Born in Illinois seventeen years ago, Sandra Ord first saw Tehran in 1959. She will be leaving Iran in June (1961) to go back to Utah for her senior year. On her way back to the States, she will spend some time in Europe. Sandy is an active Junior and Feature Editor of the Student Prints (paper). She plans to attend college at Brigham Young University. Sandy likes most everything including sports cars, people who act natural and Community.

She considers her stay in Iran as a valuable experience.

----------------------------------------

Princess: Sonja Ellison was born in Alexandria, Virginia on September 9th. She has been in Tehran since July 4, 1960 and plans to complete her senior year at Community. After finishing her schooling, she hopes to become either a nurse or stewardess. She likes a lot of things, but especially Mark P. (Pinassi). Her greatest dislike is snobbish people.

'VALEDICTORIAN'

Yvette Hagooli, valedictorian of the Senior Class of 1961, has studied at Community School since 1952.

In her commencement speech she said, "The world is depending on us and those in similar situations to lessen its burdens, famines and sufferings. No one can say there is no work to be done. Two thirds of the world population is starving in prisons of ignorance and oppression."

'AWARDEES'

Awards in five fields are granted to high school students.
- Sportsmanship: Thelma Khatchaturian
- Citizenship & Service: Shaul Ezer
- Citizenship & Service: Anne Farnsworth
- Journalism: Shaul Ezer
- Dramatics: Anne Farnsworth

'MR. & MISS CHARACTER of the MONTH'

Mary Lou Howell was born on December 1st in Long Island, New York. Her father says that she came along with all the bills. Her hobbies are stamp and coin collections. She likes swimming, but she hates hot weather. She likes Chemistry, surprisingly enough.

She has spent four years in the South pacific in Samoa. She'd love to go back. Before coming to Community School, she went to a private girls school. Mary Lou thinks that C.S. is much easier than the other school. She says that all students should work harder.

Mary Lou plans to be an elementary science teacher and wants to enjoy life to the fullest.

Tom Isenburg was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida before he came to Tehran.

Tom likes girls better than anything else - "One in particular", says Tom. He also enjoys swimming, skin-diving and water skiing. In winter, Tom tried skiing on snow and he says, "You can't conpare water skiing with snow skiing."

Oddly enough, Tom hates liver. He likes popular music.

Tom thinks that Community School needs more intermural sports and more spirit. He is an ardent reader of Peanuts. His favorite subject in school is history. He also plans to join the Air Force.

'SOFTBALL'

The first game of the 'Teenagers' was played on April 30 against the 'Scallywags'. Pitcher for the first five innings was Ken Arnold, and Bill Burgi pitched the last two innings. Brian Bowling's home run helped to bring victory to the 'Teenagers' over the 'Scallywags'.

In the next game the 'Teenagers' lost to 'Avair' with a score of eight to two.

In the 'Teenagers' versus the 'Embassy' game, Ken Arnold hit a home run over the fence. Bill Burgi came out of this game with a spiked arm and leg - when he reached down to catch the ball on second base, the batter from 'Embassy' ran over his left arm. The final score for that game was in favor of 'Embassy', 9 to 6.

The fourth game played was 'Teenagers' versus 'Atoms'. John Hoffman hit a home run but this was still an unfortunate game fore the 'Teenagers' with a defeat of fourteen points.

In the 'Teenagers' versus 'Armish' game, 'Armish' won the official score. This means that 'Armish' has the points required at the end of the fifth inning to end the game, but when both teams decided to continue playing, the 'Teenagers' won.

The 'Teenagers' played 'Scallywags' again. Ken Arnold and Brian Bowling helped to win this game, both hitting home runs.

Best of luck in the future, 'Teenagers'.

'FASHIONS'

Summer is here and so are the bright colors of the boy's wear. Many of the newest styles were worn in green, yellow and tan.

Have you seen Jack B.'s (BOYT) green shirt? Does Bob F. (Flynn) have anything to do with it? Did you see Bob G.'s (Gibbs) flashy red shirt a couple of weeks ago? Anybody notice Glenn E.'s (Ellison) gym outfit, especially the sneakers? Did you see Jamil S.'s skirts lately with the secret signals printed on them?

The fever of Khaki pants and sneakers seemed to be catchy. White slacks were especially noted for their cleanliness, and they give an itchy feeling to everybody. Tom I. (Isenburg) seemed especially noted for them. Rolled up sleeves were in view. Mike B. seemed to stick to his blue jeans and big grim.

The more catching fad in girls fashions were dirty tennis shoes. As soon as the boys find out that they are comfortable as well as informal, they'll probably start wearing them too. The only trouble with them (tennis shoes) is that they don't float.

Full slips seemed to be catching hold. All colors could be seen. The school was watching and waiting for Nancy R. (Railing) to wear any of her outfits over again (a 2nd time).

Well, so long and have a happy summer vacation.

'NOTES AND QUOTES'

Mrs. Batoon: "Mr. Kennedy, President of the Phillipines - oops.."

Larry Claassen: "It all depends on who you are. I AM the President.".

Miss Birnbaum (confused): "I'm not wasting my time. I'm wasting your time."

Shaul Ezer (trying to bring Miss Birmbaum back to speaking terms with the class): "Forgive them, for they know not what they do."

Mr. Lavi (to his twelve o'clock class): "The carbon rod is connected to the coil and plunger which moves the lunch."

Mark Pinassi (on seeing a tiny bird slip unnoticed through the window): "I knew this course was strickly for the birds."

Miss Boggs (to Guido S.): "I've only two words to tell you; one is 'shut' and the other is 'up'." Mrs. Young: "Who has a pen to lend to this barbarian."

Mr. Arpee (after a short period of time has elapsed since his engagement to Miss Wooton): "I believe in ghosts."

'HOW TO GET YOUR IRANIAN DRIVER'S LICENSE'

Foreigners here in Iran sometimes have difficulty in obtaining the Iranian driving license. Here are some tips that might help you clear up the situation.

First, you must be 18 years old to drive. If you have your country's drivers license, simply bring IT, six pictures (photographs), and your father's permission to the personnel section of your country's embassy.

If you don't possess your country's driver's license, give up and save yourself a lot of trouble and red tape.
